Born in Toronto, Canada in 1948.
Raised and educated there, graduating from University College, University of Toronto with a degree in Physics and Chemistry.
In 1970, moved to England, attending Oxford University on a Commonwealth Scholarship. Studied and taught there for five and a half years, leaving with a Masters degree in an area of Biological Chemistry.
In 1975/76 went to Israel to study in a Talmudic Academy, married and returned with my new (American-born) bride to Toronto. There worked at the University of Toronto, first in Polymer Chemistry research, and then in the Faculty of Medicine in diabetes research with the Artificial Pancreas Group.
In 1982, returned to Israel (with our two children) and since August, 1983, I have lived in a small, kibbutz-like village in the center of Israel called Moshav Matityahu. At first, worked in agriculture, (including driving tractor during the grape harvest) until "farming" ceased to be the main source of income of the Moshav. Since then, have worked at an eclectic variety of tasks including professional photography and have been able to return to study in different Talmidic Academies for various periods of time.
Asher Stein has six children, and nineteen grandchildren, is a widower and still lives on Moshav Matityahu.
